Most common endocrine system diseases we treat:
Diabetes Mellitus.- Diabetes Mellitus is a disease in which the concentration of sugar (glucose) in the blood is chronically above normal: This is known as chronic hyperglycemia.
Insulin is the main hormone in charge of glucose metabolism, since it allows it to pass from the blood into the cells.
In Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus there is a deficiency (which eventually becomes an absence) in the production of insulin.
In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, the tissues do not respond adequately to insulin, so it cannot exert its action of allowing glucose to enter the cells. This failure to respond to insulin is known as insulin resistance.
These two types of diabetes are the most common in the world, however there are other types, such as:
- Gestational diabetes
- Adult Autoimmune Diabetes (or LADA)
- Diabetes due to pancreas removal surgery, among others.
Dyslipidemia.- We call Dyslipidemia the disease in which:
- LDL cholesterol is above recommended levels (recommended levels are generally less than 130 but it depends on each person)
- HDL cholesterol is below the recommended levels (for men the recommended levels are above 40 and for women above 50)
- Triglycerides are elevated (ideally below 150).
LDL cholesterol easily sticks to the walls of the arteries, accumulates there and can be the cause of a heart attack, a stroke, or some other problem where blood does not circulate properly to the body. That’s why having high LDL cholesterol is dangerous, and the goal is to keep it low.
HDL cholesterol results from the collection of cholesterol from the blood vessels to be later absorbed in the liver and reused. In other words, this type of cholesterol is made up of what is “cleansed” from the blood vessels, so having high HDL levels protects against heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular diseases and our goal will be to keep it as high as possible.
Triglycerides are molecules that easily break down and stick to the proteins that make up cells and tissues, damaging them. The ideal is to keep triglycerides low.
Dyslipidemia is the result of a genetic predisposition (that is, it can run in the family) together with a diet that favors the accumulation of fat in the body.
Hyperthyroidism.- Hyperthyroidism is a disease in which the thyroid gland produces an excess of hormones, so its effects on the body increase considerably.
The thyroid gland can produce excess thyroid hormones in the following circumstances:
- Due to inflammation due to a bacterial or viral infection (it is called Infectious Thyroiditis)
- Due to inflammation due to antibodies against the thyroid (known as Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis depending on the type of antibodies, it is of autoimmune origin)
- Due to excess iodine in the body (known as the Jod-Basedow phenomenon)
- Some alteration in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid gland axis, that is, the problem lies in the regulation of the thyroid from the brain.
Hypothyroidism.- Contrary to Hyperthyroidism, in Hypothyroidism there is a deficiency in the production of thyroid hormones, which is reflected in a deficient metabolism and with it the symptoms contrary to those found in Hyperthyroidism:
- Sudden weight gain (5 to 10 kg in 2 months or more).
- Fatigue, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating.
- Hair loss, thinning and brittle nails.
- Constipation and upset stomach.
- Cold intolerance.
- Cold and dry skin.
- There may be changes in blood lipids (high cholesterol and triglycerides).
Some causes of hypothyroidism can be:
- After Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis there is a total destruction of the gland tissue, with which there are no longer cells capable of producing thyroid hormones (it is autoimmune) after surgery to remove the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy) and when it no longer exists There is no tissue in the gland capable of producing these hormones.
- Some alteration in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid gland axis, that is, the problem lies in the regulation of the thyroid from the brain.
Osteoporosis.- Osteoporosis is a disease in which the mineral density of the bones is very low and makes them susceptible to fractures, even in the event of minor trauma.
This happens because bone tissue is reabsorbed faster than it is synthesized, causing bone degeneration.
