Studies we frequently perform
Endoscopies.- It is a procedure where a probe that has a camera is inserted through the mouth, to examine the digestive system.
Each year, our more than 25 Endoscopic Subspecialty Physicians perform more than 1,000 minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. These include upper GI endoscopy (also known as esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), colonoscopy, small bowel enteroscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound.
Endoscopy has 2 main functions:
Diagnosis:
• Investigate digestive signs and symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, bleeding, or abdominal pain.
• Obtain tissue samples (biopsy) to detect gastrointestinal diseases and disorders that cause bleeding, anemia, or cancer of the digestive system. What are the diseases or disorders that are detected with endoscopy? The most common are Barrett’s esophagus, ulcers, cancer, esophageal varices and tumors.
Treatment:
• Digestive system problems can be resolved by using special instruments to remove polyps, remove foreign objects, or cauterize ulcers.
Pre-study preparations
• It is necessary that you stop consuming food and liquids 8 hours before the procedure, since the stomach must be empty.
• During your appointment prior to the procedure, you must inform your Doctor if you are taking any medication or supplement.
during the procedure
Endoscopy is very well tolerated because it is performed under sedation.
Generally, an endoscopy is an outpatient procedure with a hospital stay of approximately 2 hours.
At Saint Anton, we have highly specialized doctors who have extensive experience in endoscopies and sedation, in addition, our cutting-edge technology provides a quality, comfortable, and hygienic environment for our patients.
fibroscan
Fibroscan.- The Fibroscan® or transient elastography is a non-invasive study that is used to evaluate Liver Fibrosis, by measuring the elasticity or rigidity of the liver using ultrasound waves. In some equipment it is possible to also measure the amount of fat in the liver.
How is a Fibroscan® performed?
The Fibroscan® is performed on an outpatient basis, with the patient lying on their back with the right arm behind the neck to separate the spaces between the ribs. Measurements are made on the right side of the liver, the probe is placed on the skin between the ribs. 10 valid measurements must be made, at least 4 hours of total fasting are required and the duration of the study is 10-15 minutes.
Liver Fibrosis is the accumulation of scar tissue, the result of inflammation of the liver and death of liver cells. If left untreated, it can cause diseases such as cirrhosis, liver cancer, or even death.
colonoscopy
Colonoscopy.- Colonoscopy works through a colonoscope, which, thanks to a video camera attached to it, the Doctor will be able to visualize any condition that may exist, and thus, decide what measures should be taken to cure it.
This minimally invasive study is used to detect diseases in the colon, such as:
• Rectal bleeding.
• Chronic diarrhea.
• Abdominal pain.
• Chronic constipation.
• Colon cancer.
• Cancer precursor lesions (polyps).
Pre-study preparations
• Generally, Doctors will ask you to follow a special diet one day before the procedure.
• They will also ask you to take laxatives the night before, or the same day, to carry out the cleaning process.
• If you take any medication on a regular basis, do not forget to tell your doctor so that he can make the necessary adjustments.
Study duration
The procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes. It is not necessary that you stay in the Hospital, although it is preferable that someone accompany you.
At Saint Anton, we have highly specialized doctors who have extensive experience in colonoscopies, in addition, our state-of-the-art facilities provide a quality, comfortable, and hygienic environment for our patients.
